Opened as a private club in 1948, the Balboa Bay Club has long been a Southern California landmark for social and business gatherings. Its lengthy roster of visitors has included presidents, politicians, business leaders, and A-list Hollywood celebrities. Renovated and reopened in summer 2003, the property is now a full-service resort. Overlooking the yacht-filled harbor in upscale Newport Beach, it occupies 15 acres of waterfront real estate. Reminiscent of an Italian piazza, the exterior façade has European-style stone pavers at the entrance, as well as archways with a custom patina rod-iron design. Impeccable gardens include sea lavender, dwarf bamboo, bougainvillea, traditional flower beds, and a wedding garden in the south corner of the grounds. Mediterranean style also pervades the lobby, where stone floors in tones of gold and cream are the foundation for classical-style columns. Seating alcoves are furnished with rattan lounge chairs and upholstered cushions. The main resort building houses most guest rooms, along with a business center, exercise room, restaurant, lounge, and lobby. The club section features a 17,000-square-foot spa offering body treatments, an inhalation steam room, sauna, spa tubs, and relaxation lounge with fireplace (fee for entry, and spa treatments). There is also an outdoor swimming pool. Meeting venues are available outdoors and on the waterfront.
